In 1962 BMW introduced the 1500, the first of a long line of models known as the New Class. In the U.S., sales of BMW automobiles increased more rapidly in the late 1960s with the introduction of the two-door sports sedans, the 1600 and 2002. The 2002 became BMW’s best selling model with its single-carburetor, 2-liter engine, producing 15 horsepower more than the 1600. This model put BMW on the map as a builder of high performance sports sedans. In 1964 the 1600 replaced the 1500. classic BMW for sale 1600 was a responsive, four-door sedan that received excellent reviews from the automotive tests all over the world. The 1600-2 was soon introduced. It was a sportier, two-door version of the four-door 1600 that offered more horsepower and sat atop shorter 98.4 wheelbases, thus decreasing the overall weight of the vehicle and improving performance. The 1600-2 featured a 1573cc (1600) cc engine. The additional ’2′ represented the number of doors. A 105 horsepower 1600Ti soon followed. BMW was once again inching closer to its sports-car roots; a heritage it had not visited since the 1930′s.

Pressure from BMW’s US importer Max Hoffman for a swifter ’02 model helped: the twin-carb 1600 engine couldn’t pass American emissions regulations but the 2.0-litre could. The 2002, with the 2.0-litre engine from the four-door 2000 saloon in the shorter shell of the 1602, was announced in 1968 and quickly proved its potential by winning the European Touring Car Championship in the hands of Dieter Quester. A twin-carb 2.0-litre road car, the 2002ti, soon followed. A classic BMW for sale cabriolet had been introduced in 1967, and in 1971 it was replaced by a Targa-top car with a fixed roll hoop behind the front seats. 1971 also saw the introducing of another derivative, the Touring, a three-door version of the ’02 that offered an early taste of hot hatchback motoring.
In 1968 BMW decided to stuff a 2 liter engine into the car. This classic BMW for sale new car was to he called the 2000/2 but, as I’ve been told, when you say that in German it comes out “2002.” Besides, the symmetry of the number is rather neat. The 1968 2002 is a quite distinctive car. As with many BMW models there are “early” and “late” versions of the same car, a parts man’s nightmare. The later updated versions are introduced after the European car shows and hence become available in the U.S. only in March, the middle of our model year.
